Watering restrictions allow watering any day of the week from May 1 through Aug. 31.
While daily landscape watering is permitted, landscapes can stay healthy and look great with less water.
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great garden, but it sure is easy to get carried away. If you’re not a budgeter in any other aspect of your life, you are not going to change your habit in the garden. But to prevent sticker shock from arriving halfway through creating your garden, let’s look at an overview for you to price out and determine what you can reasonably expect to spend.
The Water Smart Landscapes Rebate helps property owners convert water-thirsty grass to desert landscaping, a lush yet water-efficient landscape.
When installing a landscape at a new home or business, check the turf limits in your area to ensure you meet code requirements.
If you have questions about the turf limits in your area, contact the municipal agency in which your property is located.
Mandatory watering restrictions limit landscape irrigation to one assigned day per week from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28.
Watering restrictions also apply to drip irrigation. Sunday is not an optional watering day.
So-called "irrigation zones" are an element of landscape irrigation design that allows to target water distribution with precision, thus cutting down on waste and saving you money.
The premise behind the landscape irrigation design concept of "irrigation zones" is simple enough. Before you install your system, you need to decide that area A of your land should get X amount of water, while area B should receive Y amount, etc. Once you have irrigation zones established, you will then program your system accordingly. This is one of the virtues of automatic irrigation systems: you can target water distribution more precisely than by manual watering or by using oscillators
In the fall, a little groundwork is essential to keeping your yard water-efficient and looking great:
Mow, Fertilize, Aerate
Lower your mower's height to 11 inches to stimulate new crown growth. Fertilize in late-September or early-October with a balanced mix of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
What plants achieve "most favored" status in your September yard? Forget fall foliage trees for now, as they will be hogging the spotlight next month.
I have quite a variety of top performers in my landscaping this month: a little of this and a little of that. Three ornamental grasses certainly deserve mention; then there's Liriope, which is often grouped with the grasses (although it's not one).
Mandatory watering restrictions limit landscape irrigation to three assigned days per week from Sept. 1 through Oct. 31.
Watering restrictions also apply to drip irrigation. Sunday is not an optional watering day.
Once you've figured out what you want from your landscape, the time has come to draw a landscape plan. This is an important step even if you have decided to use a landscape professional. You don't have to be an artist or landscape architect to create a landscape plan, this is just another opportunity to visualize the end result. Read more on SNWA site
Southern Nevada lies in a warm arid zone. Warm-season grass and cool-season grass are the two general grass types found in the region.
Cool-season grass removes easily, simply turn off the water supply right before removal and dig it out. Fescue, Bluegrass and Ryegrass are examples of cool-season grasses. Read more on SNWA site
When buying a container-grown tree, look for a firm, straight trunk and an equal balance of branches around the tree. A good nursery will let you check the roots as well.
Lift the tree from the container to make sure the soil mix
stays in contact with the roots. Never buy a tree with tightly congested roots
or roots poking through the drainage holes. Look for water efficiency, too. Read

One of the first steps to designing your own landscape is to conduct a site
and needs assessment. Review your current landscape and decide what you want to
change or create in your yard.
Be sure to create a water-smart landscape in harmony with our desert climate. Read more on Southern Nevada Water Authority website
Summer watering restrictions prohibit landscape watering from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from May 1 through Aug. 31.
While daily landscape watering is permitted, landscapes can stay healthy and look great with less water. Monitor your landscape closely during the hot summer days and adjust watering times or add watering days only as needed.
The Water Smart Landscapes program rewards homeowners and businesses for replacing some or all of their grass and upgrading to a water-efficient landscape. Find out more about this rebate on the Southern Nevada Water Authority website
If you use rocks of similar appearance throughout your rock garden, it will have a more natural look.
Brick or flagstone edging makes a plain exposed aggregate walkway more beautiful and formal. Edging also can help indicate elevation changes, such as where steps begin, thus making a walkway safer.
